Power outages in the Yerevan, Etchmiadzin and Armavir regions are associated with the withdrawal of nuclear power plants from the Armenian energy system, the press service of the Armenian Electric Grids company reported on August 30.
According to the organization, at 20:54 Moscow time, the automation of the Shaumyan-2 substation was turned off, which caused a power outage in several administrative districts of Yerevan, Etchmiadzin and Armavir regions.
The shutdown was due to the Armenian nuclear power plant being disconnected from the power grid. The disconnected areas of Yerevan and Armavir were powered up after 15 minutes, and the areas of Etchmiadzin – at 21:26 Moscow time.
It should be noted that in December 2023, CJSC Armenian Nuclear Power Plant entered into a contract with Rosatom Corporation to carry out a set of measures to extend the service life of the second power unit of the Armenian NPP. The second power unit of the Armenian NPP was modernized in 2021 and its service life can be extended until 2036.
