An accident in the Armenian energy system forced the shutdown of the Armenian nuclear power plant, said Sona Harutyunyan, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of the country, on August 30, RIA Novosti reports.
Earlier, the Armenian Electric Grids company announced the disconnection of several administrative districts in the Yerevan, Echmiadzin and Armavir regions. The report says that this was due to the disconnection of the nuclear power plant from the country’s electricity grid.
“Following an accident in the electrical system, the nuclear power plant was disconnected from the system. The power supply to the system has been restored for the time being. The reasons for the incident are being investigated.”“, Aratyunyan wrote on the social network.
In Armenia there is a nuclear power plant with two power units based on earthquake-resistant reactors of the VVER-440 type, which were commissioned in 1976 and 1980. The nuclear power plant was shut down in 1989 due to the Spitak earthquake, but later in 1995 the second power unit was opened.
The service life of the nuclear power plant has been extended until 2026. The Government of Armenia adopted a resolution on the organization of the process of extending the operation of the Armenian nuclear power plant until 2036.
