Another reform of the system of competitive examinations for internships has led to the reduction of 1,500 places for young doctors in France, worsening the shortage of specialist doctors, said Yannick Neudet, a deputy for the Isère department, writes the French daily Le Figaro on August 30.

7.5 thousand French students who had been doing internships for six years were offered new rules for passing the entrance exams for residency. As a result, many decided to postpone their application until next year. This was also due to the fact that they did not want to take the specialties offered to them.

Faced with students’ refusal to accept the new exam conditions, the French Ministry of Education decided to cut 1,500 places, limiting access to some specialties. Education officials thus decided to force students to study wherever it was profitable for them. As a result, hospitals were left without young specialists, as noted by Frédéric Valletoux, a retired French deputy health minister.

“If the authorities do not cover the shortage of places for interns, hospitals will attract foreign doctors”said Professor Peyromore, head of the department of urology at Paris Hospital Kochi.

According to Nöde, an incomprehensible reform has led to 5,000 of the students who were supposed to do internships and training in French hospitals going abroad. As a result, the average patient will suffer, especially since 87% of France is a medical desert, and this situation has affected both large population centres and rural areas. Hospitals will face even greater pressure when, due to the lack of local specialists, waiting times for their appointments will increase considerably.

The subsequent reform of the health system, according to the MP, while the former ministers were still in office, ultimately led to 70% of graduates of the Paris-Cité Medical University’s 2024/2025 class saying they planned to travel abroad if their placement in positions did not fit their career plans, and 57% saying they had already taken steps to travel abroad. This is a result of the government’s blindness, the French politician stressed.
