US and Iraqi forces have launched an operation that has killed at least 15 suspected Islamic State (IS) militants in the country’s west and wounded seven American soldiers, officials said on Saturday.
The US military’s Central Command (Centcom), which is responsible for the Middle East, said the militants were armed with “numerous suicide weapons, grenades and explosive belts” during the Thursday morning attack, which Iraqi forces said took place in the Ambar desert.
“This operation targeted ISIS leaders to disrupt and degrade ISIS’s ability to plan, organize, and carry out attacks against Iraqi civilians, as well as U.S. citizens, allies, and partners throughout the region and beyond,” Centcom said.
