At least five people were killed when the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) fired on an aid convoy delivering medicine to a hospital in Rafah in Gaza on Thursday evening. “This is a shocking incident,” said Sandra Rashid, director of the NGO American Refugee Assistance in the Near East (ANERA) in Palestine. The Israeli army said the attack targeted armed militants who were trying to seize control of the aid. “The carriages were not damaged and the train reached its destination. The attack on the armed militants eliminated the threat of their taking over the aid convoy,” the IDF said. According to the North American organization, there was only one ANERA employee in the convoy, who eventually walked away unharmed. He also said that the victims were not robbers, but members of the transport crew. The route had been agreed upon with the Israeli army as part of efforts to prevent attacks on aid convoys. Following the attack, Israel contacted ANERA, confirming that there were casualties in the incident and that the vehicles had reached their destination.
