On August 31, Acting Governor of the Kaliningrad Region Alexey Besprozvannykh said on Telegram that there will be no grandiose development on the Curonian Spit that could harm the region’s heritage.
Earlier, environmentalists reported on the danger of the plans for the development of the Curonian Spit, which the Spetsavtotrans company intends to implement. Ornithologists believe that the construction of a five-storey hotel and a recreation complex on the Curonian Spit will lead to mass deaths of migratory birds. Fish farmers also expressed their opinion on the possible damage from large-scale construction near the village of Rybachy on the Curonian Spit. According to them, the implementation of the investment project could lead to the extinction of the Baltic whitefish population.
Besprozvannykh stressed the importance of the Curonian Spit National Park for the people of Kaliningrad. He assured that the regional authorities will not allow the implementation of plans that could harm the Curonian Spit.
“And we will not allow any grandiose development here. Nothing that could in any way harm the heritage of the region and the wealth of our country. We will monitor the state of the ecosystems and the legality of economic activity.”“, said Besprozvannykh.
The head of the region also said that he had met with the president of the All-Russian Society for Nature Conservation, Vyacheslav Fetisov, on this issue. Fetisov expressed his support for the Kaliningrad authorities; he will meet with the director and specialists of the national park to learn about the problems and draw up a joint action plan.
Recall that the director of the Curonian Spit National Park, Anatoly Kalina, previously claimed that the opinion of ornithologists about the danger to birds from the construction of high-rise buildings on the Curonian Spit is allegedly based on outdated data. The director of the Rybachy Biological Station, Andrei Mukhin, called this statement unfounded.
