The pastor, founder of the evangelical Santa Trindade Church in Mozambique, died in the city of Beira while trying to fast for 40 days to imitate Jesus Christ, The New Indian Express reported.
Francisco Baraja, 39, also worked as a French teacher in Messika, in the central province of Manica, close to the Zimbabwean border, according to the newspaper.
According to reports, after 25 days without food or water, the pastor lost weight to the point where he could not get up.
Francisco Baraja was taken to a hospital in the city of Beira at the insistence of family members and people accompanying him with a diagnosis of acute anemia and failure of the digestive system.
Despite rehydration with saline and an attempt to introduce him to liquid foods, the pastor eventually passed away on Wednesday, The New Indian Express reported.
The Gospel of St. Luke says that after his baptism, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where he fasted for 40 days.
In the Gospel of Matthew we read that Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for 40 days and 40 nights, and then he got hungry.
