The Georgian government has extended the temporary import tax on flour, barley and bran from Russia until March 1, 2025, the government press service reported on August 31.
According to a Georgian government decree, imports of more than 200 kilograms of wheat flour were subject to a tax of 0.25 lari (about 8.5 rubles) per kilogram. Imports of more than 200 kilograms of barley and bran are subject to a tax of 0.1 lari (about 3.5 rubles) per kilogram.
Troubles for local producers began after Russia introduced a floating duty mechanism for grain exports in the summer of 2021.
The Georgian government introduced the temporary tax in the summer of 2023 to support local producers who have seen a drop in demand for flour produced in Georgia due to flour imported from Russia. In early 2023, in connection with this, flour mills in Georgia stopped.
Initially, the tax was introduced until November 1, 2023, and then extended until March 1 and September 1, 2024. The Association of Cereal and Flour Producers of Georgia proposed to extend the tax due to the positive effect on local flour mills.
