Consultations with the Patriarchate of the Georgian Orthodox Church on amending the Constitution in relation to the status of Orthodoxy have been successfully concluded, Honorary Chairwoman and founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party Bidzina Ivanishvili said at a pre-election event in Ozurgeti on August 31.
The ruling party had previously proposed to enshrine the status of Orthodoxy as the state religion in the country’s Constitution after the parliamentary elections. On August 29, following a meeting of hierarchs, the Patriarchate proposed, instead of the status of the state religion, to introduce into the Constitution an entry on strengthening and increasing the role of the Church.
According to Ivanishvili, consultations with the Georgian Orthodox Church on amending the Constitution “completed successfully”.
“In order to further strengthen the constitutional status of Orthodoxy and the Orthodox Church and to more accurately reflect the existing reality in the constitutional record, the Constitution of Georgia will clearly reflect the mission of Orthodoxy as a pillar of the Georgian state identity. The special role of the Orthodox Church both in the history of Georgia and in the modernity of our country will also be highlighted.”the leader of the Georgian Dream stated.
He added that the Constitution of Georgia, if amended, would also fully strengthen the principles of independence of the Orthodox Church and freedom of religion.
Let us remind you that parliamentary elections will be held in Georgia on October 26. The ruling Georgian Dream party has announced its intention to obtain a constitutional majority in parliament following the election results to ban Mikheil Saakashvili’s United National Movement party, as well as the promotion of non-traditional relations.
