The forest clearing competition was held in the village of Chalna on Kukushkina Mountain, the press service of the head of the Republic of Karelia reported on August 31.
The participants came from Petrozavodsk, Lahdenpokhya, Prionezhsky, Muezersky and Kondopoga districts, as well as from the Moscow region – 16 people in total, including two women.
Five tests awaited the athletes: felling a tree, replacing a chain, sawing wood with a combined cut, precision sawing and pruning.
The competition was organised according to international standards. Judges not only recorded the results of each exercise, but also monitored compliance with safety precautions.
As a result of the competition, Vladimir Dashugin became the winner, who received high marks for felling a tree, replacing a chain on a chainsaw, and cutting accuracy.
In second place is Alexander Mallat, in third place is Ilya Shvetsov.
The top three boys will travel to Perm for the national championship in September this year.
Let us recall that sport logging competitions began to be organised at the end of the 19th century. The first such competitions took place in Australia and New Zealand. The oldest and most reliable information dates back to the Sydney Royal Easter Show, which took place in Tasmania in 1891. Later, the sport spread to the USA and Canada. Today, the competition programme includes about a dozen disciplines. Most of the athletes are professional loggers. However, among the contestants there are also simple fans of extreme and non-traditional sports that have nothing to do with forestry.
Since 2015, women have been allowed to participate in international competitions in this sport. Since 2007, regional competitions in sport felling have been held in Karelia. Since 2019, women have been participating in Russian competitions.
