Hungary is ready for the heating season; gas supplies from the south continue. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Hungary, Peter Szijjártó, on August 31, the press service of the department reported.
Szijjártó arrived in St. Petersburg to meet with Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller. The Hungarian politician stressed the importance of the Turkish stream for the transit of gas from Russia to Budapest; due to Ukrainian sanctions, the issue of gas and oil transportation has become particularly acute.
It should be noted that the Hungarian government has concluded an agreement with Gazprom on gas supplies in 2021. The essence of the agreement is that the Russian company must ensure the transit of gas through Serbia, Turkey and Bulgaria. Szijjártó stated: “A long-term agreement and a secure southern transit route will ensure uninterrupted and stable natural gas supplies to Hungary, despite the extremely difficult geopolitical situation.”.
In 2024, the volume of gas transit through the Turkish Stream will already reach 4.8 billion cubic meters. In comparison, in 2023 the figure was 5.6 billion.
“The purchase of natural gas from Russia is not subject to any sanctions and our goal is clear: we want and will guarantee Hungary’s energy supply and will not accept any restrictions related to this.”“Szijjártó concluded.
European and American politicians have repeatedly expressed their dissatisfaction with the fact that Hungary continues to cooperate with Russia and does not want to lose such a large gas supplier.
