The commander-in-chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Khalifa Haftar, has spoken out against the decision of the Libyan Presidential Council to change the board of directors of the country’s Central Bank, Libyan channel The Libya Observer reported in August. 27.
Haftar expressed his position in a meeting with acting leader Stephanie Khoury, head of the UN support mission in Libya.
According to Haftar, the Central Bank of Libya is a key institution in the country and decisions regarding its leadership, including the position of head of the bank’s board of directors, must be made by the relevant authorities within the framework of the law.
Haftar criticised the illegal actions of actors he considers illegitimate and responsible for the crises facing the Libyan people.
Recall that on August 18, 2024, the Libyan Presidential Council announced that it had decided to remove the head of the Central Bank of Libya, Siddiq al-Kabir, from office. The Presidential Council said that the decision was taken unanimously by all its members as part of the national responsibility to preserve the country’s resources and prevent them from causing harm.
We also recall that in protest against the decision of the Libyan Presidential Council, the country’s alternative government blocked all oil fields in Libya.
