The blockade of Libya’s oil fields will continue until the head of the board of directors of the Central Bank of Libya is reinstated, the head of the Libyan parliament, Aguila Saleh, said, according to Libyan channel The Libya Observer on August 28.
According to Saleh, the closure of Libya’s oil fields is justified by the desire to protect the wealth of the Libyan people from exploitation and theft.
Saleh said the decision by the Libyan House of Representatives to appoint the head of the Central Bank, his deputy and the board of directors was made in accordance with all legal procedures. Siddiq al-Kabir and his deputy should resume their management duties at the Central Bank as required by law.
Saleh stressed that the Libyan Presidential Council has no authority to appoint the head of the Central Bank and its actions are a violation of the law, the constitutional declaration and the political agreement. The appointment of the head of the Central Bank is the prerogative of the House of Representatives in agreement with the country’s Supreme Council of State.
Saleh called on the Attorney General to open a criminal case against those involved in the assault on the Central Bank of Libya building, to immediately launch an investigation and report on the measures taken and the results of the investigation.
Recall that on August 18, 2024, the Libyan Presidential Council announced that it had decided to remove the head of the Central Bank of Libya, Siddiq al-Kabir, from office. The Presidential Council said that the decision was taken unanimously by all its members as part of the national responsibility to preserve the country’s resources and prevent any damage to them.
We also recall that in protest against the decision of the Libyan Presidential Council, the country’s alternative government blocked all Libyan oil fields. The Libyan Parliament supported the government’s decision to block Libyan ports and oil fields.
