UN mission in Libya to hold meeting to resolve situation around Libyan Central Bank

UN mission in Libya to hold meeting to resolve situation around Libyan Central Bank

The UN support mission in Libya has decided to hold a meeting of all interested parties to resolve the situation surrounding the Central Bank of Libya, Libyan channel The Libya Observer reported on August 27.

According to the UN mission, continuing the practice of making unilateral decisions will cost the Libyan people too much and could lead to the country’s financial and economic collapse.

The UN mission said it will convene an emergency meeting of all parties involved in the crisis at the Central Bank of Libya, with the aim of reaching consensus on political arrangements, laws and principles for the independence of the Central Bank of Libya, as well as ensuring the continuity of government services.

The UN mission also called for the suspension of all unilateral decisions concerning the Central Bank of Libya, the immediate lifting of force majeure on the country’s oil fields and refraining from using the country’s main source of income for political purposes, and an end to any escalation and refraining from the use of force to achieve political objectives or partisan interests, as well as ensuring the safety of Central Bank employees and protecting them from threats and arrests.

Recall that on August 18, 2024, the Libyan Presidential Council announced that it had decided to remove the head of the Central Bank of Libya, Siddiq al-Kabir, from office. The Presidential Council said that the decision was taken unanimously by all its members as part of the national responsibility to preserve the country’s resources and prevent any damage to them.

We also recall that in protest against the decision of the Libyan Presidential Council, the country’s alternative government blocked all oil fields in Libya.
