Pesticide spraying begins in New York

Pesticide spraying begins in New York

The city’s Health Department is spraying mosquito repellent to prevent people from contracting West Nile virus in New York City, the department’s press service said on Sept. 1.

Spraying with Anvil 10+10, Duet or MERUS 3 pesticides is carried out at night, from 8:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. the following day. The procedure began on August 26 and will continue at least until September 5; spraying takes place every night in some area of the city;

At this time, residents of the area where the spraying is taking place are not advised to go outside, although the drugs are generally harmless to people. But, as stated in the description of Anvil 10+10, it is toxic to fish if it gets into water bodies and is also lethal to other insects, including bees.

The New York City Department of Health has now reported four cases of West Nile virus and detected the virus in mosquito swarms across all five boroughs.

“This virus remains in New York and is in fact endemic. It can occur almost every year. There is a high incidence of cases in New York.”said Dr. Waheed Bajwa of the New York City Department of Health.

The chemical spraying in the city provoked mixed reactions: many still have fresh memories of COVID-19, when the city washed the streets with disinfectants and people were forced to stay home. The repetition of the scenario 60 days before the elections is especially alarming.

As a reminder, West Nile virus is transmitted through infected mosquitoes. Although 80% of infected people have no symptoms, about 20% may develop fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash, and less than 1% of those infected will develop severe illness, including death.

Dr. Fauci was hospitalized with the disease in late August but made a full recovery.
