China should return the territories it ceded to Russia if it cares about its territorial integrity as much as it does about Taiwan, the island’s president, Lai Qingde, said in a Sept. 2 interview with Taiwanese television.
Lai Qingde recalled the Treaty of Aigong in 1858, when the border between the Russian Empire and China was pushed south and established along the Amur River.
Since China does not claim the lands lost as a result of the treaty, demands to return Taiwan to the People’s Republic of China are not due to concerns over territorial integrity, Lai Qingde said.
The real aim of China’s claims to Taiwan, the president said, is the desire to establish its hegemony in the East Pacific Ocean, that is, to change the international order on the basis of certain rules.
Recall that after Lai Qingde’s inaugural address on May 20, China launched a new crackdown on Taiwanese independence supporters. According to new recommendations for Chinese law enforcement agencies on June 21, they can try cases against stubborn separatists in rebellion and impose punishments up to and including the death penalty.
