The anniversary medal “80 years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945” was established by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The corresponding decree was published on September 2 on the official portal of legal acts of the Russian Federation.
The award is presented in honour of the upcoming 80th anniversary of the Victory. “In order to pay tribute to the great feat, heroism and dedication of war veterans, I decree: to establish a commemorative medal “80 years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945””the document says.
The obverse of the medal shows a reproduction of a photograph of the Victory Banner over the Reichstag, taken by Soviet war correspondent Yevgeny Khaldei on 2 May 1945.
The medal is awarded to war veterans, residents of besieged Leningrad, Sevastopol and Stalingrad, as well as minor prisoners of Nazi concentration camps.
Those who served for at least six months during the Great Patriotic War (with the exception of the occupied territories of the USSR) will also be awarded.
