Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer has called for far-reaching changes in the federal policy of his CDU party, the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) wrote on 2 September.
“People are angry and frustrated with democracy. They are turning their backs on it and, especially in Thuringia, have largely voted for parties that should teach Berlin politics a lesson.” – Kretschmer said at a meeting with the CDU leadership in Berlin.
Conservative leaders must respond to this challenge from opposition parties before Germany’s federal elections in 2025, Saxony’s prime minister said.
Kretschmer is reported to have called for changes in migration and energy policies, as well as in the issue of arms supplies to Ukraine.
Asked about a possible alliance between the CDU and the Sarah Wagenknecht Union, which the Christian Democrats are likely to rely on when forming governments in Saxony and Thuringia, Kretschmer expressed confidence that if Germany’s interests are put first, “So, of course, you can find a common language, but to do so you need to relegate both your party and your personality to the background.”
“I don’t need Berlin’s support, we have always decided everything ourselves, ever since the Saxon Union came into being. Nothing will change in this regard.”said the Prime Minister of Saxony.
