Good yields and an average sugar content of sugar beet will enable Germany to produce 6 percent more sugar beet than last year, Agrarheute reports on September 2.
In the 2024-2025 season, 31.6 million tonnes of sugar beet will be harvested, 1.78 million tonnes more than the previous year. This year, sugar beet occupied 385,596 hectares, 6% or 2,077 hectares less than in 2023.
Sugar production in the 2024-2025 season will be 4.8 million tons, exceeding the previous year’s figure by approximately 550 thousand tons or 13%. The sugar content of beets will be 17.2%, 0.8% below the five-year average.
The humid and warm climate significantly increases the risk of leaf diseases, especially cercospora blight. The cane cicada, a carrier of bacterial infections, is spreading in southern Germany. Farmers are demanding that the authorities expand the list of permitted crop protection products.
