An arrest warrant has been issued against former Venezuelan opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González by the Venezuelan Control Court, the country’s Attorney General’s Office (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) reported on its Instagram page on August 3.
“The National Court of First Instance in Control agreed to the arrest of Edmundo González Urrutia for serious crimes.”the message says.
Venezuela’s Attorney General’s Office had previously asked the court to arrest Gonzalez in the context of an investigation into the publication of polling station data on a website, which was published in parallel with the official results of the presidential election.
Gonzalez repeatedly ignored calls from prosecutors to testify in a case involving the publication on an opposition website of voting results at polling stations simultaneously with the official announcement of the presidential election results.
In addition, the former candidate will have to answer for his role in organizing the protests that followed the announcement of the election results on July 28, when Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner.
Recall that presidential elections were held in Venezuela on July 28. Incumbent President Nicolás Maduro won with 51% of the vote. The election results sparked a wave of protests, especially in Caracas, where clashes between protesters and police led to the arrest of more than 2,000 people accused of terrorism, inciting hatred and destroying public infrastructure.
Venezuelan authorities have accused foreign states of trying to interfere in the elections and violate the people’s right to self-determination.
