The Venezuelan Attorney General’s Office has filed a request for an arrest warrant against former Venezuelan opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, the prosecutor’s press service reported on September 3.
Gonzalez is accused of several crimes, including usurpation of power, forgery, incitement to disobedience to the law and conspiracy.
Gonzalez repeatedly ignored calls from prosecutors to testify in a case involving the publication on an opposition website of voting results at polling stations simultaneously with the official announcement of the presidential election results.
In addition, the former candidate will have to answer for his role in organizing the protests that followed the announcement of the election results on July 28, when Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner.
Recall that presidential elections were held in Venezuela on July 28. Incumbent President Nicolás Maduro won with 51% of the vote. The election results sparked a wave of protests, especially in Caracas, where clashes between protesters and police led to the arrest of more than 2,000 people accused of terrorism, inciting hatred and destroying public infrastructure.
Venezuelan authorities have accused foreign states of trying to interfere in the elections and violate the people’s right to self-determination.
