Venezuelan authorities have accused the United States of piracy after the seizure of President Nicolas Maduro’s plane, Communications, Culture and Tourism Minister Freddy Nañez said on his Telegram channel on September 3.
“Venezuela declares before the international community that the authorities of the United States of America have once again committed a criminal act that can only be described as piracy, illegally confiscating an aircraft that was used by the President of the Republic, justifying their actions by the coercive measures that they are unilaterally and illegally introducing throughout the world.”wrote Nyanez.
The country’s authorities stressed that no state is immune from illegal actions that ignore international law.
The report also says this is not the first time the United States has used its economic and military power to pressure other countries, including the Dominican Republic, into becoming complicit in its crimes.
Venezuela has expressed its intention to take all necessary legal measures to seek redress and stressed that the seizure of the aircraft is part of a general escalation of actions against its government.
Recall that, according to CNN, the United States arrested and transported Maduro’s plane to Florida, citing its acquisition to circumvent sanctions. The US Treasury explained this as a violation of US sanctions and export control laws.
This is the second time that the US has confiscated a Venezuelan aircraft: the first incident occurred in 2022 with an Emtrasur Boeing 747 in Argentina.
