The United States, if Kamala Harris is elected president, will continue on the path of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, Senator Chris Coons said in an interview with South Korean publication Yonhap on September 3.
The senator expressed South Korea’s concern that the recently adopted US Democratic Party political platform does not mention denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, saying such a goal remains an “established party policy.”
“This is obviously the policy of the Biden administration. I would consider its absence to be a specific, worded proposal in my party’s policy platform, which indicates nothing more than stated policy.”Coons said, stipulating that Harris would continue this policy.
At the same time, he said that North Korea’s support for Russia during the conflict in Ukraine closes the possibility of negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington.
Republican Senator Bill Hagerty, who also arrived in Seoul and spoke to reporters, said the Trump administration would not betray the alliance with South Korea.
“South Korea has been a strong ally. I don’t see any change from the perspective of our alliance.”“Hagerty said.
At the same time, Hagerty said that the Trump administration, if it comes to power, will definitely review the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which was adopted to provide investments to large foreign technology and energy companies. Among them are South Korean companies such as Samsung and SK.
