The number of people injured in accidents involving electric scooters in Sochi since the beginning of the year has exceeded 470 people, Interfax reported on September 3, citing data from the city’s mayor’s office.
Since the beginning of the year, 472 cases of emergency visits due to scooter injuries have been recorded, of which 125 were children. In response to the growing number of incidents, the Sochi administration and the owners of electric scooter rental services have stepped up control and safety measures.
Authorities and rental companies have taken a number of measures to reduce the number of incidents, including blocking 1,700 accounts of minors. These measures reduced the number of injuries by half.
For added security, kicksharing operators create “blacklists” to prevent users from moving between companies after their accounts have been blocked.
Parking lots for electric scooters have also been relocated to be further away from school zones. The city has set up 36 zones where the use of electric scooters is prohibited and speed limits have been introduced in 37 zones, including embankments and parks.
