US House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul has summoned Secretary of State Antony Blinken to testify on the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, Fox News reported on September 4.
The subpoena was issued after Blinken reportedly refused to appear before the committee earlier. Lawmakers have indicated that if Blinken fails to show up for the committee’s Sept. 19 meeting, he could be held in contempt of Congress.
In response, the US State Department expressed disagreement with the specified date due to Blinken’s employment and offered alternative options for his appearance.
It should be noted that this challenge is associated with the end of almost 20 years of US military presence in Afghanistan, when the US military left Kabul airport on the evening of August 31, 2021.
In early September 2021, the formation of an interim government in Afghanistan was announced under the leadership of Mohammad Hassan Akhund, former foreign minister during the first reign of the Taliban (an organization banned in the Russian Federation), which has been under UN sanctions since 2001.
