Former US President Donald Trump has refused to participate in the hearings on the new case of election interference and has authorized his lawyer to declare his innocence. The Republican presidential candidate announced this on September 3 in an appeal to the court.
“I waive my right to participate in a preliminary hearing and authorize my attorney to plead not guilty to all charges.”Trump said.
It should be noted that the preliminary hearing of the case will be held in Washington on September 5. Special prosecutor Jack Smith has filed updated charges against Trump.
Trump has previously sought to have criminal cases against him dismissed, citing a Supreme Court ruling granting him immunity from prosecution for actions committed during his presidency. However, the court said the immunity is not absolute and only applies to acts in an official capacity.
On January 6, 2021, Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, causing Congress to be blocked for several hours. The incident has become central to the charges against Trump, who maintains his innocence and accuses the Democratic establishment of trying to prevent him from returning to the White House.
Trump currently faces 91 charges in four criminal cases. The total possible sentence for all charges could exceed 700 years in prison.
