A woman admiring the $42,000 (€40,000) sculpture “Balloon Dog” by world-famous artist Jeff Koons smashed the sculpture, accidentally dropping it to the ground, at an art gallery in Miami, USA, this Thursday evening.
The 20-year-old work of art had an unfortunate end on the first day of Art Wynwood, a contemporary art fair in the North American city, according to the publication. Miami Herald.
“When the piece hit the ground, it felt like a car accident had pulled a huge crowd onto the highway,” Stephen Gamson, an artist and art collector who witnessed the incident, told the paper.
The artist said that many people present at the scene wondered if the incident was part of the performance. “Not this time. It really was an accident,” added Gamson.
American artist Jeff Koons is known for his pop culture references and images of everyday objects such as the giant egg bowl at Art Basel last year. The prices for Jeff’s work are not for the faint of heart, as one of the Balloon Dog sculptures in orange was sold in 2013 for $58.4 million (€54 million). The Rabbit sculpture, which looks like a balloon bunny armed with a carrot as a knife, is one of the most expensive pieces of art ever sold by a living artist. It cost $91.1 million (€84 million).
