The National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Administration (ANEPC) issued a public warning this Wednesday due to cold weather and rain forecasts for the next few days.
A civil protection statement said that, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), cold weather and precipitation are predicted for the next few days, namely a drop in temperatures with below-average lows for the season, periods of more frequent rain on Friday that could be accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, wind and the formation of black ice and frost in the interior of the country.
ANEPC also indicates that snowfall is expected on Thursday above 600/800 meters in the northern and central regions and above 800/1000 meters in the southern region, temporarily dropping to 400/600 meters by the end of the day.
Civil Protection warns the public about the risks of inhalation poisoning due to inadequate ventilation, home fires from improper use of fireplaces and braziers, or breakdowns in electrical circuits, and recommends paying particular attention to the most vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly and people with chronic conditions and the homeless population.
The authorities are also paying attention to the dangers of slippery floors and the possible formation of water and ice sheets, as well as the possibility of falling branches or trees due to strong winds.
The ANEPC also advises citizens to avoid prolonged exposure to the cold, wear multiple layers of clothing, and exercise caution about outdoor physical activity.
