The Cape Verdean government is set to discuss with the European Union (EU) in the coming days support for strengthening the archipelago’s cybersecurity, one of three cooperation priorities announced this Friday by Deputy Prime Minister Olavo Correia.
“Three important topics that I will also take on in this mission: the maritime economy, energy and digital transition and, above all, cyber security and internet security, where we want to get strong support from the European Union and we have positive signs on this issue,” Olavo Correia said this Friday in Praia, looking forward to an extraordinary ministerial meeting on cooperation between the EU and Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP) and Timor-Leste (PALOP-TL) to be held in Brussels. from February 28 to March 1.
Olavo Correia will lead the Cape Verdean mission in Brussels as Minister of Finance and Business Development in meetings attended by European Union Commissioner for International Partnership Jutta Urpilainen.
“Above all, it should be about promoting good governance, encouraging transparency and creating the conditions for us to have a well-governed state that manages to govern based on results for citizens. And we must have an institutional basis. it may allow us to do so. The legal base is in strong institutions as well as highly qualified human resources. And we have more resources at the level of the European Union so that within PALOP and Timor-Leste we can continue to invest in this area. Better institutions, a more modern legal system, but above all, highly qualified human resources,” he added.
During these meetings, a funding agreement for a new project “Supporting Economic Governance in PALOP-TL” between the government of Cape Verde, representing these Portuguese speaking countries, and the European Union is to be signed.
Prior to the ministerial meeting, technical staff from both sides will meet on February 28 to agree on the agenda and documents to be presented to the PALOP-TL ministers and European Union representatives, an event coinciding with February 30. years of cooperation between PALOP and Timor-Leste and the EU.
On the sidelines of official meetings, Cape Verde is presenting a “strong agenda” to the European Union in three main areas in which the country intends to “make an important leap,” Olavo Correia said.
“The first area is related to changes in the energy sector. The EU is an important partner for Cape Verde in promoting energy change and we have an ambitious project in this area. The second important area is related to the sea, because with airport infrastructures and, above all, also the connection of infrastructures with the energy transition and with the digital issue, which is also important, which will be on my agenda,” he said.
“The third area is related to digital technologies and, above all, cyber security, protecting our digital space, as well as creating the conditions for us to have strong institutions in Cape Verde in terms of promoting cyber security and internet security. And we want the EU to be a strong partner for Cape Verde,” he concluded.
