Members of Georgia’s largest opposition party, the United National Movement (UNM), protested in support of their informal leader, former President Mikheil Saakashvili, on February 28 at the Justice Ministry building. This is reported by the IPN agency.
Several dozen protesters are demanding the release of the former Georgian leader from custody on health grounds. They believe that treatment abroad is vital for him.
One of the organizers of the action, Giorgi Mumladze, noted that Saakashvili’s poor health was even announced in a note from all 27 EU countries. The document was handed over to Georgian Justice Minister Rati Bregadze the day before, and the protesters are demanding that the will of the Western partners be carried out.
“We came to Rati Bregadze to tell him that in addition to political responsibility, he will also have to bear legal responsibility, and he will definitely be punished for participating in the deprivation of a prisoner’s life for his inaction.”Mumladze said.
Remember that Saakashvili’s supporters have been escalating the situation for about a year, claiming that he will die soon if he does not receive treatment outside of Georgia. Since November 2022, the information campaign has intensified, and in 2023 US and EU politicians began to join.
Meanwhile, doctors at the private clinic where Saakashvili was transferred from prison nine months ago report that he does not follow the doctors’ instructions: he hardly eats, refuses many medicines and nutritional droppers.
