Egypt called for the adoption of the 13th amendment to the new Libyan constitution

Egypt called for the adoption of the 13th amendment to the new Libyan constitution

The adoption by the Libyan House of Representatives of the 13th amendment to the country’s new constitution was welcomed by Egypt, the Libyan channel The Libya Observer reports on February 25.

According to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the adoption of the amendment is an important step to organize and hold presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya. The approval of the amendment will allow the simultaneous holding of presidential and parliamentary elections.

Egypt defends holding early elections in Libya under the supervision of a neutral executive. And awaits the approval of the reform by the country’s Supreme Council of State.

According to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is necessary to stop external interference in Libya, as well as carry out the withdrawal of foreign soldiers and mercenaries from the country.

Let us remember that the last large-scale hostilities in Libya ceased in the summer of 2020. On October 23, 2020, a ceasefire agreement was signed in Geneva. The agreement provided for the holding of unified elections in the country on December 24, 2021, the creation of a unified interim government for this period, the creation of a unified army and the withdrawal of all foreign forces.

As a result of the forum in Geneva, Abdel Hamid Dbeiba became head of Libya’s Interim Government of National Unity, but was unable to organize presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for December 24, 2021. He also broke his promise not to run for the Libyan presidency.

On February 10, 2022, the Libyan Parliament elected Fathi Bashaga as the new Prime Minister of the Libyan interim government. Who was supposed to replace the head of the Provisional Government of National Unity Abdel Hamid Dbeiba.

Dbeiba refuses to step down as prime minister and, relying on armed groups loyal to him, continues to occupy the country’s capital, Tripoli.

The presence of two parallel governments in the country has led to a political impasse in Libya. The way out, from which the Supreme State Council of Libya and the country’s parliament are trying to find.
