Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), visited the earthquake-affected Turkish provinces of Gaziantep and Hatay as a sign of solidarity with Turkey, writes Hürriyet Daily News on March 1.
It should be noted that the WHO director also came to Turkey to observe the organization’s efforts to provide assistance to those affected by the earthquake. Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, traveled with him.
“I have just arrived in Gaziantep to meet with health officials, medical workers and rescuers, as well as people affected by the recent earthquakes”— wrote Ghebreyesus on social media.
In addition, he visited the field hospital of the Belgian ambulance brigade in the Kirihan district of the city of Hatay.
“Many people lost everything because of the earthquakes in Hatay. The authorities have established reception centers for these people, including primary health care centers that offer psychosocial support for children, routine immunizations and dental services.the WHO director-general said in a statement.
It should be noted that Kluge, before arriving in Gaziantep, met on February 27, 2023 with the Turkish Deputy Minister of Health, Sabahattin Aydin, in Ankara.
“From March 1, WHO in Turkey and WHO in Europe will be headquartered in Gaziantep, joining UN relief efforts”Kluge said.
