Japanese telecom giants NTT and KDDI will start joint development of new-generation Innovative Optical and Wireless Networks (IOWN) on March 1, NHK TV reports.
NTT is already building networks under this name. According to the corporation’s plan, by 2030 it is expected to increase mobile network bandwidth by 125 times compared to 4G networks. At the same time, the corporation intends to reduce energy consumption to 1%.
According to NHK sources, NTT intends to enter into a joint development agreement with KDDI in the near future. Together, they will implement IOWN network technology that can achieve massive data exchange while reducing power consumption.
The companies are seen as competing because they both operate their own mobile networks. Together, they hope to achieve the standardization of IOWN as 6G communication networks.
