Crowds of protesters, including members of parliament from opposition parties, stormed one of the parliament’s meeting rooms to attend the consideration of the foreign agents bill. This was reported on March 2 by the First Channel of Georgia.
According to journalists, there was a fight inside the parliament when they tried to warn the opponents. The protesters managed to enter the room where the bill is scheduled to be discussed and started a riot. The meeting cannot start.
Opposition MPs are reportedly trying to get media representatives loyal to them and representatives of non-governmental and non-profit organizations into parliament. There are fights between the opposing sides.
Recall that several opposition parties in Georgia reacted extremely sharply to the introduction of a bill in parliament on the mandatory registration of NGOs, NGOs and media outlets receiving foreign funding as “agents of foreign influence.” The initiative is supported by the ruling Georgian Dream party.
The opposition calls the demand that foreign agents report on finances “repression. Criticism also began to surface in Western countries and the US State Department. Georgian authorities have been threatened that if the law on the registration of foreign agents is passed, it could prevent the country from obtaining the EU candidate status.
