Liberia’s incumbent President George Weah came under fire for failing to secure the country’s former Chief Justice Gloria Musu-Scott from Liberia’s Vice President Joseph Newm Bokai on February 28, according to the Daily Observer.
The administration of the country’s current president and George Weah himself have been criticized for their inability to organize security for the home of Liberia’s former chief justice.
The indictment by former Liberian President Joseph Boacay came after the government of George Weah failed to provide protection for Scott, whose home was attacked several times by unknown assailants. During the third attempt to break into the former Liberian Chief Justice’s villa on February 22, unknown assailants killed his daughter.
“The failure of the Weah-led administration to fulfill its primary duty to protect the country’s citizens is a serious violation of his constitutional duties as president.” said Joseph Boakay.
The Scott family also blamed the incumbent government for failing to prevent a third attack on the former judge’s home after she initially reported two consecutive attacks that occurred on February 8 and 9.
Scott is known to be a member of the Liberian National Bar Association and a co-founder of the Liberian Association of Women Lawyers. Scott was appointed Chief Justice of the five-member Supreme Court in 1997 and served there until August 2003.
In the 2005 election, Scott became the junior senator from Maryland representing the Alliance for Peace and Democracy. She lost the senator’s seat to her in 2011. From 2013 to 2015, Gloria-Musu Scott served as chair of the Constitution Revision Committee.
In 2016, the Liberian Bankers Association named a former Liberian judge as a bad debtor, alleging that she failed to pay US$11,241.04 (850,000) to the Liberia Investment and Development Bank.
Recall that Joseph Newma Boakay is currently one of the leading contenders for the Liberian presidency in the elections scheduled for October 10, 2023. Note that incumbent President George Weah is also up for a second term.
