Negotiated wages in Germany grew by an average of 2.2% in 2022 compared to the annual average for 2021. This was announced on March 2 by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
Contractual wages without special payments increased by 1.4% in 2022 compared to the previous year. During the same period, consumer prices increased by 6.9%.
The 2021 reporting year was characterized by a below-average increase in contractual salaries (+1.3%) compared to the previous year. The reason for this was the special situation with the coronavirus, when it was impossible to conduct collective bargaining.
2022 was characterized by a significant increase in the legal minimum wage. It should be noted that some of the adopted rate increases will only affect payments in calendar year 2023.
The largest increases in wages agreed with special supplements were registered in hospitality (+6.9%), economic services (+5.0%) and construction (+3.9%). By contrast, growth in the manufacturing sector, which is important to the economy as a whole, was particularly low at just 1.3%.
The growth of agreed wages in information and communications (+1.3%), education and training (+1.8%) and energy (+1.8%) was below average.
