A fine has been issued to its owner for a cat walking alone in the German town of Waldorf. On March 3, the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung writes about this.
The cat’s owner was fined 500 euros for the fact that his stray cat repeatedly found itself in a danger zone for a crested lark living in southern Waldorf. It is noted that the fine can reach up to 50,000 euros if the lark is harmed.
The crested lark is a critically endangered bird species. A fine may be imposed if the owner, contrary to the order, does not interfere with the freedom of his pet during the lark breeding season.
The critical period, when the young birds leave the nest and are not yet able to fly, lasts from April 1 to August 31. The sanction may be imposed repeatedly in the same amount.
Some cat owners have spoken out against house arrest for their animals. It is reported that the regional office in Karlsruhe received 39 objections, but all were rejected.
The district administration, which established an enclosure for cats, considers this measure justified. Last year, while the cats were cooped up at home, eight chicks fledged.
