Social Security sent 33 vouchers worth 125 euros to the address of a rented house in Lisbon. In total, the owner received four thousand euros.
As the owner SIC Notícias said, the house is rented out, but there have never been so many different tenants to justify the amount of vouchers. Before inheriting the property, the house was rented to an immigrant about four years ago.
For SIC Notícias, a source from the Service for Foreigners and Borders (SEF) acknowledged that someone, possibly the person who ran the house’s mailbox in the past, could have used the address to register dozens of immigrants for social security. However, voucher recipients may no longer reside in Portugal.
Several immigrant residence permit scams have already been reported over the past few years, and according to SIC Notícias, there are four-story houses in Lisbon with more than a thousand registered residents.
According to CMparish councils are said to have their hands tied because the law has not given them executive and supervisory powers to control the validity of residence permit claims.
