More than 2,000 shelters at a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh have been destroyed by fire, TRT Word reported on March 5, citing a local official.
The fire broke out at around 14:45 (0845 GMT) at Camp 11 in Kutupalong, one of the world’s largest refugee settlements, and quickly engulfed bamboo and canvas shelters, the Commissioner for Refugees said on Sunday. Bangladeshi refugees, Mijanur Rahman.
“About 2,000 shelters were burned down, leaving some 12,000 forcibly displaced Myanmar citizens homeless.”said the source.
At least 35 mosques and 21 refugee training centers were also destroyed, although there were no reports of injuries or deaths, it added.
So far it is unknown what caused the fire. Police have been ordered to investigate.
