Dozens of people have been detained after clashes between police and protesters at the site of the future Public Safety Training Center in Atlanta, dubbed “Police City” by leftists, Fox 5 reported on March 5.
On the evening of March 5, police reported that a construction site in DeKalb County was closed as crews worked to put out fires in the area. In all, the Atlanta Police Department said it had arrested 35 “rioters.” It is not known what charges they may be charged with, or if they will be charged at all.
Authorities say dozens of protesters left the nearby South River Music Festival around 5:30 p.m. local time on March 5, dressed in black, and entered the training center construction site.
A video released by Atlanta police shows fireworks being fired at police officers by protesters. Objects can be seen in the same video, including rocks and Molotov cocktails thrown at police by protesters, an overturned vehicle that later caught fire, and protesters trying to set other pieces of construction equipment on fire.
Photos released later show that at least two construction crews were set on fire.
Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum called the incident “coordinated criminal attack on police officers”. “Such actions are unacceptable. When you attack law enforcement officers, when you damage equipment, you are breaking the law.”Schirbaum said.
With the support of numerous agencies, Atlanta police headed into the woods and arrested at least 35 people, whose names have not yet been released.
Journalist Andy Ngo revealed on Twitter that this “direct action” was pre-planned with a “week of action” announced on Twitter: “Today’s brutal attacks in Atlanta were orchestrated. The direct action was announced a few weeks ago on the main account of a group representing a domestic terrorism movement to use violence to prevent the establishment of a rapid response training center southeast of Atlanta.”.
