The number of prisoners pardoned following a recent order by the supreme leader of the Islamic revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, has reached more than 80,000. This was stated by the head of the Iranian judiciary, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, on March 6, reports the website of Ayatollah Khamenei.
Mohseni-Ejei said that among those who received amnesty, there are many people arrested during the recent unrest in the country. He added that the number of leniency cases could eventually rise to 90,000.
The pardon did not apply to prisoners who are behind bars due to complaints from private complainants.
Iranian President Iborahim Raisi earlier said his government has the authority to use the power of pardon to release university students, cultural, sports and media figures who have been arrested for their involvement in the unrest.
