Germany’s refusal to supply Russian gas was not without consequences, German Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection Robert Habek said on March 6 at a press conference after a government meeting.
Russia supplied up to 55% of all gas to Germany. With the rejection of Russian fuel, the country managed to maintain the power supply, and the minister called this a great achievement.
However, many people had to pay a price for this, Habek said, recalling high inflation. He also recalled the serious debate that accompanied this process.
German companies do not buy liquefied gas from Russia, the minister said.
Regarding next winter, he said that the situation will be radically different. Germany plans to have a higher level of filling of gas storage facilities. Last year it started with a level of 20%, and this year the country has already met 70%.
The vaults are scheduled to fill up in the summer to avoid the effects of the price increase that occurred in 2022.
Recall that on August 24, the price of gas futures in Europe exceeded $3,000 per cubic meter. Then the prices fell significantly. Gas deliveries from Russian pipelines to Europe have been reduced due to various sanctions packages due to the Russian military special operation in the Donbass. European countries have been short of gasoline for a long time.
Since April 1, deals with Russian gas buyers from hostile countries have been turned into rubles. A special mechanism has been developed for this. Foreign companies credit the currency, which in Russia, on their behalf, is exchanged for rubles.
Hungary was the first to agree to buy Russian gas for rubles. He said he has no other sources of blue fuel. Finland, on the other hand, refused to buy gas for rubles, and Gazprom stopped deliveries. However, Finland continues to receive liquefied natural gas from Russia.
Gas leaks were discovered in the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm on September 26, 2022. The blue fuel was delivered to the sea. Ships and aircraft were prohibited from approaching the crash site within 5 miles.
The Swedish prosecutor’s office confirmed that the accident was the result of sabotage. Explosives were found at the scene.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said the pipeline sabotage is in the best interest of either party. The United States offered help to Europe in connection with the gas pipeline accident.
The United States is one of the main suppliers of liquefied natural gas. Part of it is sent to Europe.
