The Israeli security agency Shin Bet said it had exposed a Hamas cell in Turkey that was planning attacks on Israeli territory, the Jewish News Syndicate reported on March 6.
During the operation, four Palestinian students were arrested. Ahmed Mahmoud Abu Salah, 24, was detained and questioned after returning from his studies abroad. According to the agency, as a result of his interrogation, three more were arrested: Iyas Mahmoud Abu Salah, 20, Salah Mahmoud Abu Salah, 23, and Hassin Fauz Akra, 25.
Ahmed Mahmoud Abu Salah allegedly met senior Hamas officials in Turkey and was reportedly recruited for “military” training in Turkey and Syria. According to the Shin Bet, he was tasked with recruiting followers to create a cell in the West Bank.
The Shin Bet said the instructions included “training in the handling of weapons and the study of the production of explosives with the purpose of preparing terrorist attacks against the State of Israel”.
The son of a senior Hamas official in Turkey maintained regular contact with the four students.
