New and better equipment is needed for Dutch police units that ensure public order at mass events to effectively counter the rising violence, representatives of the country’s law enforcement agencies told BNR television on March 6.
The police point out that the uniforms available to the Dutch riot police do not always withstand beatings with sticks, stabbing with knives, stones and dangerous fireworks. Police officers also need gear that is easier to put on and take off for faster deployment.
“The current uniform has been in use for ten years. But unlike the events of a decade ago, we now see groups seeking confrontation, not stopped by the presence of riot police. Some groups also wear special protective clothing. Partly for this reason, the equipment needs to be replaced.” a police spokesman said.
Current uniforms are too hot and have weak spots that often leave police officers bruised, he added.
“We have been saying for a long time that current equipment does not protect enough. We are also seeing more and more violence against police officers. The fact that the new uniform is more reliable is very important for the riot police to be able to do their job.” said Maarten Brink of the ACP police union.
