The Azores will face a “significant deterioration” in weather conditions and rough seas Monday from Monday 6pm to Wednesday 6pm, the Navy warned.
A joint statement from the Navy and the National Maritime Administration said the wave will have “significant height that can reach seven meters and a maximum height of 13 meters, with an average period of 11 to 13 seconds.”
“Southwest quadrant winds are expected, with an average strength of up to 65 kilometers per hour with gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour,” they indicate.
The Navy and the National Maritime Administration are warning the maritime community and the general public “of the need to exercise caution both in preparation for going to sea and at sea or in coastal areas”, recommending increased mooring and “close observation of moored and standing on anchored by ships.”
“Avoid walking along the sea or in areas prone to sea waves, such as protective piers in ports, cliffs or beaches, so as not to be taken by surprise by the wave,” is another precaution.
The Navy and the National Maritime Administration are also asking that recreational fishing be avoided, “especially along cliffs and cliffs, as well as sections of cliffs that are often hit by breaking waves, always keeping in mind that in these conditions the sea can easily reach, apparently safe area.”
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has placed the islands of the Western Group under the yellow level of danger since the end of this Monday due to the forecast of unrest at sea.
According to IPMA, the yellow warning for the islands of the Western Group (Flores and Corvo) will be in effect from 18:00 Monday to 12:00 Tuesday.
A Yellow Alert is issued by IPMA whenever a risk situation arises for certain weather dependent activities.
