The United States was not counting on a change in Russia’s position on the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty during the ministerial meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the G20 countries. This was announced on March 6 by the head of the State Department’s press service, Ned Price, at a press conference.
“The US Secretary of State has clearly stated three priorities to Minister Lavrov”he said.
The United States had no illusions that a brief contact with the minister could change Russia’s position, Price said.
“We are still willing to cooperate if it is in our interest”said the State Department representative.
Recall that the day before, The New York Times, referring to a senior State Department official, wrote that during the meeting, Blinken made three “observations” to Lavrov: the United States will continue to support Ukraine, Russia should rejoin the New START Treaty , from which it recently withdrew, and abide by its terms, Russia must release US citizen Paul Whelan, whom the US believes the Russian Federation wrongfully imprisoned.
Later, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that US Secretary of State. “didn’t even stutter” on the release of Paul Whelan.
