Chinese leader Xi Jinping urged not to forget about the environment in seeking to increase industrial production during the first session of the 14th parliament on March 6, Xinhua reports.
“We should by no means take rash and reckless measures, drain a fish pond, or focus only on GDP growth”said President Xi, speaking about the importance of preserving the environment.
He recalled the pollution of Lake Tai by industrial waste, which led to the rapid reproduction of blue-green algae in China’s third-largest freshwater lake, drastically worsening water quality.
“We say that clear waters and lush mountains are an invaluable asset, but if we don’t protect the environment, we will lose more than we benefit”Xi pointed out.
