Palestinians applauded Luiz Inácio da Silva’s (Lula) victory over incumbent Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, hoping that Lula’s success would “strengthen global support for the Palestinians,” The New Arab reported on Oct. 31.
For his part, Ahmad al-Dik of the Palestinian Foreign Ministry told New Arab that bilateral relations between Brazil and Palestine took a step backwards during Jair Bolsonaro’s presidency, citing Bolsonaro’s “unbalanced approach” in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
“Da Silva is known for his support of the Palestinian cause; his views are consistent with United Nations resolutions”Al-Dik said in an interview with TNA.
Salem Mefre, 65, a former mayor of a small town near Bethlehem, was delighted with Da Silva’s victory in the elections for his support of Palestine.
“He was a man of the poor and raised the Brazilian economy. I wish people here were like him.”Mefre added.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, the leader of the Palestinian party, told TNA that Da Silva’s electoral victory would boost global support for the Palestinians and pave the way for a “multipolar world.”
