The only presidential candidate from Turkey’s largest opposition alliance will be the leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the alliance said in a statement issued on March 6 after a meeting of opposition party leaders.
“As the presidents of the political parties that make up the National Alliance, we declare that our common presidential candidate for the 28th Turkish Grand National Assembly and the 13th presidential election to be held in 2023 is Mr. Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. May this decision bring prosperity to our country and nation.”says the statement.
In early March, a crisis arose in the six-party opposition alliance when the leader of the Party of Good (IYI), Meral Aksener, announced that her party was withdrawing from the alliance due to its refusal to support Kılıçdaroğlu’s candidacy as the only opposition presidential candidacy. candidate.
According to Aksener, his party insists on nominating the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, or the mayor of Ankara, Mansour Yavas. Both politicians are under the tutelage of Kılıçdaroğlu in the CHP, but according to polls, they are more popular among voters.
As a result of a series of negotiations, the leadership of IYI and CHP agreed that Yavash and Imamoglu, in case the opposition wins the elections, will take over as vice-presidents.
