94 billion euros needed to rebuild earthquake-affected parts of Turkey

More than $100 billion (about 94 billion euros) will be needed to rebuild parts of Turkey hit by several earthquakes in February, the UN estimated on Tuesday.

This assessment is based on a joint assessment by the UN, the World Bank, the European Union and the government of Turkey, said Louise Vinton, UNDP Turkey Representative.

The amount does not include funding for the reconstruction of cities in northern Syria, which were also affected by the natural disaster and where the delivery of humanitarian aid is difficult for security and logistics reasons.

According to him, a month after the earthquake, which killed about 46,000 people in Turkey alone, “it is already clear that material damage will cost more than $100 billion.”

On February 6, Turkey and northern Syria experienced two earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 7.6 on the Richter scale, followed by several aftershocks that destroyed thousands of homes in places where millions of people lived.

The UN estimates that at least 6,000 people in Syria have died in the earthquakes and that more than 8 million are in need of urgent assistance, including 4.1 million in opposition-controlled areas in the north of the country and 4 million in government-controlled areas. , for the government.

After the tragedy, 2.7 million people were forced to leave their homes because they were destroyed or badly damaged.
